Formed in Glasgow in January 1996, Belle and Sebastian took their name from the classic French childrens book (and later animated film) by writer Cecile Aubrey and were compared to The Smiths and Nick Drake. Expanding on their sound their are also influenced by fellow Scottish indie heroes like The Pastels. At times wistful and with a twee element the band quickly became an underground hit before their breakthrough album ‘The Boy With The Arab Strap‘ in 1998.
Led by Stuart Murdoch the band formulated the first Bowlie Weekender, which set the precedent for future events at holiday camps by the All Tomorrows Parties stable. After a number of band members departed with equally critical success, Isobel Campbell with her album alongside Mark Lanegan and Stuart David with his Looper project, the band returned to the live stage in 2010 with a well received headline slot at the Latitude Festival.
